Hummingbirds expected to arrive in Ohio in next few weeks

Hummingbirds are fascinating creatures, known for their rapid wing beats and iridescent feathers. In Ohio, their arrival marks a transition period as they head toward their breeding grounds.

Feeders: Place feeders in a shaded area to prevent the nectar from spoiling too quickly. Use a mixture of 1 part white granulated sugar to 4 parts water, and avoid using honey or artificial sweeteners, which can be harmful to hummingbirds.

Flowers: Plant native flowering plants that produce tubular blooms, such as trumpet creeper, bee balm, and salvia.

Maintenance: Clean feeders thoroughly with hot water and a brush at least once a week to prevent mold and bacteria growth. Rinse well before refilling.

Perches: Although hummingbirds don't typically perch while feeding, providing nearby perches can help them rest and observe their surroundings.

By preparing your yard for their arrival, you can enjoy these beautiful birds throughout their stay.
